Support » Plugin: Custom Sidebars - Dynamic Widget Area Manager » Unable to communicate back with site to check with fatal errors

This may be just my set up but if you’re looking for the plugin giving you the “Unable to communicate back with site to check with fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP” error I found custom sidebars to be causing my problem.

I found this by using the health check plugin to troubleshoot one plugin at a time.

  • I have the same problem. Identified this plugin as the source.

I note, with some annoyance, that threads on this showstopper are being closed fast. Not a great help.

At last I have located the issue as it effects me. But not a solution.

If I try and edit a php file on any of my (differently hosted) servers I get the problem using Chromium, Firefox or Vivaldi in Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 or Kubuntu 16.04.

Switch to Windows and no problem.

So it points to the handling at the client end triggered by the change in code. It may also explain why the authors cannot reproduce the issue.

Any others passing here with this issue please report what client/os you are using. Let’s see if there is a pattern.

    Hey @cbcbcb, @kilmenyjane, @brainsys,

We are aware of the Custom Sidebars causing errors with latest WordPress version. Our developers working on this issue, one of the next releases it will be fixed. Thanks for your patience!

    Cheers,
    Oguz

Just to add that I reproduced the issue (failing on Ubuntu based distros but working on Windows) using a dedicated VM with an untouched virgin installation using the Seventeen Theme. That is no customisation at all.

Best wishes. We shall stay on 4.8.x for the duration …

I’m having this problem on many websites. I just need to be able to go to the files and change text — update phone numbers, for example, or change footer text. In many cases, these are sites with custom themes and lots of plugins. Having to go through the entire troubleshooting process each time is very impractical.

Is there any plan to solve this problem, or does anyone have a faster workaround?

I am trying to join the Amazon Affiliate program and use their smart phone connecter. I followed these directions EXACTLY:

    WordPress
    Login to your WordPress account.
Go to the dashboard of your blog page.
Click on “Appearance → Editor” on the left pane.
Select Footer.php file from the right pane under templates.
Add the popover ad code before </body> tag in the template.

When I do this – the following error is what I see:

“Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.”

    What do I do?

    Hey there all,

just tested that with latest version and seems that works well, so I’m marking this thread as resolved.
Feel free to post back here, if more assistance is required and we can re-open it. 🙂

    Warm regards,
    Dimitris
