• I am unable to update to 4.7 as I just get a blue screen that says “update” but nothing else happens. I never had any trouble before so I do not know what the problem is. I wonder if it is with the new version that the wordpress developers overlooked. Unfortunately, I am not very savy so does anybody have any suggestions? If it goes beyond just pressing the “update” button I am not very good at fixing things in the files at cpanel. When I read suggestions on the forum they are not explained well enough for me to understand when they say go to this or that file and change this or that.

We’ve had a few million successful update so far, but this is definitely a new report.

Try deactivating all plugins, then trigger the update.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Sixteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

If those don’t work, you’ll probably need to do a manual update: https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

Thank you for your quick response. I tried deactivating all the plugins and eventually changed the theme as you suggested but it still would not update to the 4.7. I am on a shared hosting with Name.com and the site is a subdomain. Perhaps this is where the problem is. I also looked at the manual update and I would no where near be able to understand how to do that. I will check with my hosting to increase memory perhaps. If they cannot help, I guess I will just stick to the old version as long as I can.

    Thanks again,
    Steve

If your hosting provider can’t help, please do try https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

I know it looks complicated, but it’s not actually as bad as it looks, the guide is just excessively detailed.

If you have any questions with it, please let us know!

Thanks for your time and effort. I am afraid I do not understand about files. I know how to get to them but am not sure how to bring them up or delete them.I have not even ever been able to install a FTP file system without running into a barrior to stop me. I almost know for sure that I would mess up my entire site for sure. I could never learn about files because in the years of researching and googleing nobody has ever explained it on a total beginners level for me. I have searched thru WP Beginners – and all the wordpress forums for years and could never make any sense on how to do it. It is is always explained on a technical basis for those who already understand files. The reps at Name.com will not even touch the files because they do not understand well enough to do it either probably. I will either have to change hosting or just erase the site eventually. This is what WordPress problematic updates do to me. In the 5 years of using wordpress I have never had a problem updating to a new version until now. I have looked at the forums for problems updating this version and there are a lot of them listed. But the explanations might as well be in chinese – because I do not understand them what so ever.

For working with FTP/SFTP, try an FTP/SFTP client with decent documentation, like Cyberduck https://trac.cyberduck.io/wiki/help/en or FileZilla https://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Documentation

For connecting to FTP/SFTP, consult your hosting provider’s documentation.

FTP/SFTP is all at the server level, entirely independent of WordPress, so most WordPress documentation won’t be able to help you with that.

@neddyrich1 Could you please share a screenshot of that blue screen you mentioned initially? You can upload it on a site like http://imgur.com/, http://pasteboard.co/ or https://cloudup.com/.
