  • Two pProblems with display and use of Categories and Subcategories

Subcategories do not display as expected in the sidebar widget. They appear out of order, at the same level as categories and not indented under their parent category, which runs against WordPress and otherwise intelligent practice.

Display of subcategories in the admin side post page metabox is erratic, and does not update correctly. When sub-category is chosen for a new post and placed under a new parent category, it requires that the parent category also be selected. This is, or should be, unnecessary — a post can not be in a sub-category of a parent category it does not also belong to.

If both choices are not made, the metabox displays all the subcategories for the main category out of order and not indented under the parent category as they should be.

The metabox display is then not only ‘broken’ for this particular post, but for every other post which share the same category and subcategory. Further, the check mark on the parent category has disappeared on these other posts — at least those which also have subcategories checked.

However, the right relationship appears to be maintained internally, because even though the checkmark on the category is now missing, when that category is selected in the sidebar widget for display, the correct categories are displayed. Same thing for a sub-category.

Both problems above would seem to be problems with the display of the widget, and the display of the metabox, while the WordPress core itself appears to maintain the correct information.

Please note that on my recent query regarding the unnecessary showing of default images on posts that don’t require them, you misunderstood my problem completely, explain how to regenerate images, when I do not want images at all. In that thread I have outlined in considerable detail both the problem and the temporary fixes I have made.

    Oops,

Okay, I see that I missed the switch in the widget box to turn on hierarchy. The second issue is still a problem, which I imagine can be simply solved by automatically checking the parent category whenever a sub-category is checked
