The second .htaccess as you can see have information from Itheme security plugin which I have deleted, should I delete this information manually since I have deleted plugin?

  • I would take a backup of the second file containing all the ithemes code, and then delete it. You should never have more than one htaccess file in a directory, so it is odd that ithemes created a new file – but not important now given that you no longer use the plugin.

Thanks for your response. Giving to this issue, the htaccess that is populated by itheme security is seems to be the original htaccess from wordress while the one that is populated by wordpress is like duplicate looking into their names.

    Htaccess.orig – populated by wordpress

    htaccess – populated by ithemes.

Can I copy over wordpress detail in .htaccess.orig to .htaccess and delete the .htaccess.orig?

Giving to that, am not sure which one is really original to keep with.

I see. When plugins make changes to the .htaccess file, because it is so sensitive, they often make a backup copy in the event of any problems with the new code they insert. So in this case:

.htaccess.org = your original file before you installed ithemes and saved as a backup
.htaccess = your file after ithemes was installed and added its code, and the file WordPress will read

The strange thing is that if you are using pretty permalinks, you would need the #BEGIN WordPress -> #END WordPress code placed in the new file ithemes generated in order to continue using pretty permalinks. It’s odd that ithemes did not copy it into the new file.

My advice would be to make a backup copy of both files, and then
    1) delete .htaccess
    2) rename .htaccess.orig to .htaccess

    Then test your site.

I tried your method, but it break my site. The home page loads fine, but every other page or post creates 404 error. So I have to revert back.

Ok. Try deleting both .htaccess files, and then go to the WordPress dashboard -> Settings -> Permalinks -> (select your preferred permalink structure) -> Save changes. This will regenerate a new .htaccess file.

If this does not work then you may need to remove all other traces of ithemes from your site, which will be in the wp-config.php file and the database. See the 5th comment on this thread, and remember to make a backup of your wp-config file and database before making any changes πŸ™‚

Ok thank you, am going to try that one out, and report back once am done with any result.

Thanks very much. your last suggestion worked well. Am glad you helped me out.
    Thanks ones again.

I just deleted the two .htaccess, log in to my admin dashboard, go to settings —> permalinks and clicked on update. Now everything is back to normal with one .htaccess.

That’s great news! I’m happy to hear you are back to using only one .htaccess
