Recently, the WordPress sites I host seem to be very frequently experiencing the following error from the Jetpack Twitter widget:

Error: Twitter did not respond. Please wait a few minutes and refresh this page.

Did something change in the recent Jetpack updates that would impact Twitter connectivity?

  • What’s changed is Twitter’s policies: the latest version of their API puts very strict limits on how many requests can be served to a single address, which includes all the other sites hosted on your server if you use shared hosting. Because it comes from Twitter’s end, all the Twitter widgets are having the same problem.

Are these the new limits you’re referring to?

I run a hosting service focusing on hosting & supporting WordPress blogs for people, and I want to make sure I’m able to communicate these changes effectively to my clients so they don’t think that it’s a problem specific to my hosting.

That’s the one. Good luck — anecdotally, I’ve run into it with multiple plugins and on multiple hosting environments, and seen support questions about a bunch of plugins other than Jetpack. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to explain to clients that the problem would be there on any other host!
