Twitter short urls are crashing my site!

  • Ever heard of short urls taking down a site? This is such a bizarre issue. When a link to a blog post is tweeted, and the short URL is clicked, the WordPress site crashes. This ONLY happens on the short URLs first click. After rebooting the server, the short url works and the site loads fine. This happens EVERY time.

More info when that short URL is clicked after tweeting – the site just appears to be loading, with a blank white screen. It will just hang there. Eventually, after several minutes, you may encounter the “Error connecting to database” message.

  • I’ve got a client that is experiencing the same issue. The problem appears to be that a sudden burst of traffic occurs that completely clobbers mysql. Funky thing is that there isn’t a real visitor burst in stats. I’m still researching this though.
