Twitter share count API does not work anymore
-
On November 20 2015, Twitter has turned off the share count API, here the official announcement: https://twittercommunity.com/t/a-new-design-for-tweet-and-follow-buttons/52791
Unfortunately, at this time, is not possible to get (officially) the number of shares of Twitter.
If there is another way to collect the Twitter share count in the future we will check if it’s possible to get back the Twitter share count. For most users, this will be bad news, but unfortunately we can not do anything. If Twitter has decided this, we can only accept!

That’s unfortunate! Is there some way we can turn off the counter for Twitter, but leave the count on and total shares for all the other options?
Hi stereogirldesign,
from the 2.5.1 version of the plugin (both free and pro version) the Twitter counter has been deleted, but all other features remain unchanged (all individual shares and the total shares) 🙂Best,
CrestaProjectHi, I wanted to offer newsharecounts.com as an option to get the Twitter share counts. Website owner would need to add their site to tracking, and from that point your plugin could display the share counts.
What do you think?Hi brugeman,
yes, it’s an option, but unfortunately it is not official Twitter share count.
And I think I cannot integrate it into the plugin.CrestaProject
Hi CrestaProject,
is it possible what stereogirldesign said?
Having the floating bar with facebook,twitter,.. and still show the share count? At the moment the share count is always 0 (because twitter does not load). Only thing I can do is removing twitter so that the share counter works, but then people cant share via twitter 🙂
Thanks
Hi designcat,
try updating the plugin to the latest version (2.5.1), because from this version, the Twitter button no longer has the number of shares 🙂
If the problem persists, it could the cache (if you’re using a cache plugin).Regards,
CrestaProjectHi, CrestaProject.
NewShareCounts is not an official API, but many websites are already using it, and some plugins are already integrating such third-party services, like https://wordpress.org/plugins/super-socializer/
Thanks!
Hi everyone,
from version 2.5.4, the plugin uses NewShareCounts API to get Twitter Share Count.
You can activate this option through the plugin options 🙂Best Regards,
CrestaProjectI’ve tried to activate this via the NewSharecounts API, but Cresta does not seem to be registering tweets even after I’ve followed the instructions of entering in my website’s URL into the NewShareCounts site. Could you please clarify if I’m supposed to ALSO add this code into my site header or footer?
<script type="text/javascript" src="//newsharecounts.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/nsc.js"></script><script type="text/javascript">window.newShareCountsAuto="smart";</script>I had assumed this would be built into the plugin, but perhaps it’s not?
Hi jpl980,
there is no need to add code, the plugin automatically generates the javascript code.
Follow the instructions in this page http://newsharecounts.com/twitter-share-counts-in-cresta-social-share-wordpress-plugin/
If you notice that it is not working, try clicking on the “Support” button in http://newsharecounts.com/, they will definitely help 🙂Best Regards,
