This affects all user of social share button plugins:

Twitter is shutting down the share count API likely at some point during November. (Probably 20th) This is an official announcement by twitter: https://twittercommunity.com/t/a-new-design-for-tweet-and-follow-buttons/52791

Whats does this mean for my website?

Mashshare and all other available third party social media plugins will no longer be able to collect the twitter share count and your site’s twitter share count will not grow any more.

Fortunately Mashshare is storing the posts twitter share count in the database as long as you do not purge the Mashshare internal cache via the debugging function. So your visible share count will not drop until purging the cache.

If there is another way to collect the twitter share count in the future we will check if it’s possible to get back the twitter share count.

This is a bad day for everyone who is using the twitter share button on his website!

Update: I will release an update very soon which will bypass this, so Mashshare will be able to show the amount of twitter shares again. It will be a less accurate method, but still be a good indicator of amount of tweets.

Has this been fixed? What happened to the “fake share” count? It is no longer working on my site.

Please send me a mail with link to your site to info [at] mashshare.net

    Hi, Rene!

Can I suggest newsharecounts.com as an alternative to track and display Twitter share counts?

The website owner would have to sign-up with their Twitter account and add website to tracking, and from that point on all Twitter shares would be counted. Your plugin could use the public API to retrieve and display share counts.

i will get in contact with the owner of newsharecounts.com to check out first what their plans are for the future and if there are any restrictions or costs later.

Any updates on Mashshare’s ability to count twitter shares?

    Thread Starter Rene Hermenau

    (@renehermi)

Twitter counts are counted again with Mashshare since two versions ago.
Please check the settings in Mashshare->settings->general

Thanks Rene, I’ve updated and switched to Mash Engine. Counts still feel low… any way to check how many shares NewSharedCount is counting for articles to make sure everything is working correctly?

Have you connected your website to your twitter account on http://newsharecounts.com/?

After doing it only took a few minutes until tweets are counted. Be aware that only last 7 days are counted.

Yes it is connected. When you say it only counts the last 7 days, you mean the last 7 days total? ie: if there have been 1,000 shares on day 8, but none after that, the total contribution to Mashshare’s SHARE number would be 0?

    Thread Starter Rene Hermenau

    (@renehermi)

Mashshare sums up the twitter shares everyday from the time point of its installation. If you have installed mashshare on day 8 back in time you will get the total of tweets until today including the 1000 shares made on day 8.

Only tweets from the last 7 days are returned by the twitter API, so tweets from day 16 are not included.

There is no possible way solution to get older tweets. The earlier you have installed Mashshare the more accurate your tweet count will be for older posts.

Tweet count for fresh posts will be accurate in future as long as you do not purge the Mashshare cache.

Rene, the facebook count has been resolved with the latest update. Not sure when it happened, but the twitter count stopped working at about the same time the facebook count stopped working. I have a couple articles receiving hundreds of tweets, likes, and retweets, but the twitter counts are stuck at low numbers like 0 and 1.

You have to make sure that your site is connected with the newsharecounts.com service.
