twentytwelve header width/resolution best practices

  • I have a child theme to twentytwelve. In uploading the recommended width header, a crop is suggested narrower than my uploaded 960×200 header image, at around the 80% width mark [from left]. Why?

I’m assuming this may be related to resolution differences. My computer sees the whole width of the image while a friend of mine’s computer sees only about 80%.

So I have a few questions:
    1) Is there a more ideal width to use in twentytwelve header spot than 960?,

    2) If I make the header image narrower, does the whole page width become narrower?

    3) Would folks here just recommend that all vital communication pieces of a 960x___ header be shown within the left-most 80% of that area and leave the header image’s width as-is?

    Thanks so much!

This doesn’t sound right, the 80% thing you refered to, is that what you read from some where ? Can you explain more on this ?

When you upload a 960px width image to the Custom Header, it will be used in the theme as 960px, no 80% crop.
