Support » Alpha/Beta/RC » twentyseventeen input fields unreadable on reversed screens

    At http://2017.wordpress.net/blog/ input fields lack background color or there is a bug in CSS. On reversed screens such as high contrast O/S themes, white on black etc., text in input fields like Search, comment textarea etc. is practically unreadable (Firefox 49.2 on Ubuntu 14.04).

    From the CSS (style.css:919-):

        color: #666;
        background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(rgba(255, 255, 255, 0), rgba(255, 255, 255, 0));

    1. A gradient of 2 equal colors seems pointless.
    2. Alpha 0 renders black here.
    3. Body has no background color set!? I assume it is supposed to be white.
    4. It’s perfectly readable with background-color: white;.

    Can you take a screenshot so we can visualize what you’re saying?

    Also can you check on other themes to see if this is an issue there as well?

    Screenshot made with a white-on-black O/S theme:

    Screenshot made with a black-on-white O/S theme:

    I tried to dig deeper but I fail to understand what is actually going on. And I made a mistake in my original post: body has a background color set, and it is white.

    I guess this is because of special handling of form inputs by Firefox.

    I suppose by “other themes” you mean WordPress themes. I tried the preview of https://wordpress.org/themes/twentysixteen/ . There all is fine. Looking at the CSS I see that also has
    background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(rgba(255, 255, 255, 0), rgba(255, 255, 255, 0));
    (I really wonder why), however, there is also background: #f7f7f7;. So, it works.

    Hi,

    You are quite correct, the background colour is only defined for browsers in the webkit family, and is lacking a fallback for normal ones (twentysixteen has that fallback with the background attribute as you mentioned).

    I’ve created a ticket for the issue at #38939 where you can follow it and provide any added information.

    As such I’ll mark this thread as resolved, this just means there is a ticket for tracking the issue, and helps us keep on top of what needs addressing still, thank you very much for the report here!
