[twentyeleven] landing page that displays 2 of the latest posts from a blog page

I’m totally new to wordpress and am still trying to get my head around a few things so often I’m finding very obvious things staring me in the face.

My query is, how do I get a landing page that displays two of the latest posts (daily specials) beneath the navigation bar? I’m just toying with a child theme of digital raindrops two column post and would love if a person landed on the site they would instantly see the specials side by side. Then the person could go the Specials section from the navigation bar and see the entire specials.

How do I get two dynamic pages? One feeding information from the other?

It seems at the moment I can either do one or the other. I can either have a static landing page and a blog of specials or a dynamic two post landing page and a static special page.

I really need a hand with this so please help!
