Twentyeleven: change hover color of main menu items?

I’ve been reading threads on changing hover color but either the request doesn’t exactly match what I want to do, or the answer loses me (I’m pretty new) and because the topic is closed I can’t ask questions.

Here’s what I want to do and why: When I mouseover a main menu item, the color changes from white-on-black to black-on-pale-gray. When I mouseover a submenu item the color changes from black-on-very-pale-gray to black-on-pale-gray. And, the color of the main menu item remains pale-grey when the mouse leaves it.

To me, this makes it look like only the submenu items are interactive. Can anyone tell me how to make the main menu item either change back to white-on-black when the mouse goes to a submenu item, or change to the very-pale-gray, so the main menu item appears interactive?
