Twenty Thirteen Theme Translation

I have downloaded the .mo and .po files through translate wordpress, and am currently using Polylang to switch between two languages. I added the .mo and .po files to the /language directory of the the theme (I am using a child theme, but uploaded the translations to the parent theme), but the theme related text is not translating along with the site when I switch between languages. I have not edited any template files yet. If anyone has any ideas why this isn’t working, I would be very grateful. I do not think this is plugin related, I’m pretty sure I missed a step on the theme part. Thanks!
