Twenty Ten Theme – Stylesheet set to default after upgrading WP

  • After I emergency upgraded THREE of my blogs whereon I had the twenty ten theme installed and modified, I realized that my stylesheet had been set back to default. It had been overwritten by the upgrade package of WP 3.04! Now I have to redesign! three websites from scratch.

I did assume that the upgrade package would not contain any theme since that wouldn’t be very logic and only enlarge the package and the upgrade time. Now since there is nothing I can do about it and I don’t have a backup, I thought I’d first of all, write this here as a warning to all who have their blogs running on twenty ten, and secondly as a ‘feature – remove – request’ to the developers.

    Happy New Year!

  • Twenty ten is the included theme with WordPress, you shouldn’t modify it but create a child theme instead.

The twenty ten theme is the default WordPress theme, and since a theme is required for WordPress to work, you can consider TwentyTen a core part of WordPress and you should not expect modifications to the core to remain after an upgrade. I do see that many people make this mistake, but the developers would have to separate the theme from WordPress and provide them as separate downloads.. which just doesn’t make sense when the theme is a required initial component. At least for now it’s not likely to change and we can only educate those to create child themes as intended.
