Support » Themes and Templates » Twenty Fourteen Change after WP Update

  • I received an update informing me that my site had just been automatically updated to WP 3.8.2 (did I miss a notification about this???). Suddenly my left sidebar menu is gone, yet every menu item is at the bottom of the page, each item (no drop-downs) in a linear list. I’m also using the full-page template, however; the featured image now takes up the entire page! It’s a mess. Does the update not work with 2014? Any thoughts on what’s going on and how to fix this? Btw, I’m a CSS bone-head, so hopefully you guys won’t hit me with a bunch of coding fixes unless you think that you can REALLY walk me through it.

    Thanks!

  • It sounds like the appropriate template is not loading. If you do not have a child theme, I suggest you make one by Install instant wordpress (http://www.instantwp.com/)on your computer, get the 2014 theme and make a child theme copy (https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes) then make one or a couple of pages and get them to look like you want. then do your theme updates. see how it looks and if it is correct then you can upload and replace and install the child theme on your site.
This is only one way, Im sure there is other ways to do this without getting instant wordpress (its free) but I don’t know any other way.
    Good luck!

Thanks dkerswell, I’ll give that a try. Hopefully it will load ok for the child theme. I don’t have any back-end changes to make, just a few plug-ins for now.

Actually, I just discovered something! In Firefox, which I normally use, my Twenty Fourteen themes is distorted. When I use Google Chrome, it loads fine.

I’ll still go with the child theme suggestion – it just sounds like a good idea. But do you or anyone else have any idea what adjustments I can make to make my site compatible with all browsers? This update could be a problem with some of the others, so it would be great to have a fix.

    Thanks again!

I think the browser incompatibility question is one for the how to and trouble shooting section, try there. Good luck!

    Hi D,

Yeah, I figured as much. I tried to re-post yesterday after I had my revelation, but a MOD responded that I need to “stick to my original thread” and closed it, lol! That was helpful.

But thank you for your recommendations, as I have adopted them. In the meantime I will look elsewhere for a solution.
