Can you upload a publicly accessible image, and better still can you link to a page with the issue?

Sure, you can see my test here:

I have the same images and portfolio project on WP cloud here:

As you see in the second case it works. Used images are exactly the same. The theme is also the same in both cases (just with colours and font customisation in the first version).
When I inspect element in the first version I see that for some reason the generated image is 100×100:

even though when editing the post I’m selecting the image to be used with 800x800px (you can see a screenshot here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/795vheq7j1zhrg3/Edit_Project_%E2%80%B9_%E2%80%94_WordPress.jpg?dl=0).

Does the issue persist with the same image as your WordPress.com site?

Yes, I have just set the same img on my server. It persists with whatever img from the ones I have on the server, even bigger images.
Only if I upload the image again, it works well. Does it mean I have to upload again all my images?? And why, since the images in the post content are displayed correctly?

Still when you say this:

I think the theme might be resizing the images in a certain ratio, if the image is completely square then it appears to resize the image quite small – and resize I mean generate a smaller thumbnail to use on that Page.
To avoid having to re-upload things try using this plugin to regenerate the thumbnails https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Great! I regenerated thumbs with the plugin you suggested and it solved the problem!
