Support » Themes and Templates » Twenty Eleven child theme: modified footer.php?

  • I created a simple child theme for twenty eleven.

    I put the @import line in the style.css file inside the twentyeleven-child folder.

    So far, so good.

    I then modified a copy of footer.php, and put that in the same twentyeleven-child folder.

    I activated the Twenty Eleven Child theme.

    Chaos is the result: the site appears broken, and has some miscellaneous text displaying here and there. All I did in the footer.php file is to change some text in the div#site-generator.

    If I make the same changes in footer.php, and load the new file into the twentyeleven folder (NOT the child folder) it works normally, and shows my changes.

    I suspect I am missing something here.

    TIA for your suggestions!

  • Hello,
    it seems to me that it might be a styling problem. Make sure everything in the style.css in the child folder is set up properly. It should look like this:

     Theme Name:   Twenty Eleven Child
     Template:     twentyeleven
    @import url("../twentyeleven/style.css");
    /* =Theme customization starts here
    -------------------------------------------------------------- */

    Then, activate the child theme. If everything looks good, fine. If not, there must still be a styling problem. If all looks good, add your footer.php and see if everything works.

    Thanks. I took over the admin of this site from the previous administrator, someone who made some changes to the core code, unfortunately. I have a clone of the site on one of my servers, so I guess I’ll have to investigate further.

    My child theme’s style.css file is correct, though.
