I’d like to turn off the Rich Text editor for all existing users. Is there a way to do this via the database?

I’ve disabled it as the default, but this doesn’t affect accounts that already exist.

As an Admin, I’ve tried going into the user profile to uncheck each box manually, but the option is not there.

  • Set the rich_editing meta_key for each user in the wp_usermeta table to false.

Might want to do a backup before doing that just in case.

Just a note that lack of existence of a rich_editing record for a given user means that WordPress will use the default setting specified in the Options, Writing, “Users should use the visual rich editor by default” checkbox. So suppose you could just delete all those records (where the meta_key is equal to rich_editing) to accomplish the same thing.

    Thanks MichaelH.

The SQL command is as follows, if anyone else needs it:

    UPDATE wp_usermeta SET meta_value = ‘false’ WHERE meta_key = “rich_editing”
