Trying to install WP on university hosted directory (5 posts)

    Hi,

I'm trying to install WP on my directory on my school's server (slu.edu), however I don't know how to access/create a MySQL database. Is this something that will be beyond my capabilities? As far as I know, I only have FTP/SSH access.

I suggest contacting SLU's Help Desk or Systems Administration and ask them.

You can try logging into your host via SSH and executing mysql there, but you'll probably want their guidance.

    Thanks for the reply.

I installed Putty and I was able to connect via SSH but I don't know the MySQL database name. Guess I'm stuck for now?

If you were given a mysql username and password, then you can use Putty to login to mysql:

    mysql -u username -ppassword

    Then view all available databases:

    mysql> SHOW DATABASES

    or just run:

    mysqlshow -u user -ppassword

You can't do anything without a database. Ask the SLU sysadmins.
