  • Resolved superlou

    (@superlou)

    I’m a long-time Drupal user, and have been getting my feet wet with WordPress to help out a community group I volunteer with. So far, its pretty enjoyable, but I ran into a wall on a plugin I was writing, so I figured I’d check out the IRC to see if I was doing something dumb.

    Anyway, I joined the IRC channel #wordpress and was immediately banned. I was identified with the nickserv as Superlou. I’m not too sure how to continue with figuring out what happened, and would appreciate some pointers.

    Let me know if there is additional information I can provide.

    Thanks,
    Louis

    I’ve checked the irc logs and I can’t see anything that suggests you were banned by anyone in channel.

    Thank you for the very quick response! I had tried connecting from my home PC immediately before posting, and it had announced I was banned, but am away from that PC until tomorrow evening. I just tried authenticating with the nickserv and logging in on a different PC and I haven’t been booted yet. Will give it another shot as soon as I am back at my PC.

    I just got back to my home PC, and from there I receive “Cannot join #wordpress (You are banned).”

    My whois info from freenode is

    * [superlou] (~superlou@ool-45752fb4.dyn.optonline.net): superlou
    * [superlou] #xbmc #ubuntu +#timeofeve #survivorzero #space #RubyOnRails #requirejs #reprap #red5 #raphael.js #python-unregistered #nookdevs #Node.js #lemoncurry ##japanese #httpd #gstreamer #drupal-media #drupal #documentcloud #damnsmalllinux #boardgames #blender #backbone-boilerplate +#anime
    * [superlou] moorcock.freenode.net :TX, USA
    * [superlou] is connecting from *@ool-45752fb4.dyn.optonline.net 69.117.47.180
    * [superlou] idle 00:02:55, signon: Sun Dec 16 20:29:15
    * [superlou] is logged in as SuperLou
    * [superlou] End of WHOIS list.

    Have you tried using another nick?

    That also fails with the same error:

    * You are now known as notme
    * Cannot join #wordpress (You are banned).

    Trying to get some other eyes on this…

    I see the ban:

    *!*@ool-45752fb4.dyn.optonline.net added by hlin December 13, 2012 6:57:44 PM CST

    But that wouldn’t account for:

    * You are now known as notme
    * Cannot join #wordpress (You are banned).

    It sounds/looks like an IP based ban.

    @esmi I looked at the ban list. See my edited post above.

    According to the irc logs the user was banned for language after multiple warnings.

    Speak to sivel or viper007bond on IRC.. They’re the most active ops for the channel.

    As you’ve no doubt noticed, since it’s an address-based ban on a dynamic IP, connecting from elsewhere will let you in, but that’s technically ban evasion and might be frowned upon.

    Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten a chance to use another computer to log in from, and I’d feel bad as ban evasion is pretty bad etiquette.

    Possibly related though: I remembered that a while back I had made a DroneBL ban list because of a port-forwarding condition I forgot to remove (I think, serves me right for trying to test out an oembed server from a home cable account). Anyway, that was resolved a month ago or so I thought. A day ago I was locked out of Freenode again even though DroneBL says I’m clear. It was quickly resolved, but I feel like the plot has thickened.

    Does the WordPress channel use any automated ban lists?

    As far as I know there’s nothing that sophisticated managing the channel ban list.

    * Viper007Bond sets mode: -b *!*@ool-45752fb4.dyn.optonline.net

    (The ban has been removed.)

    Connected fine, thanks! Any idea what might have caused it?
