Support » Plugin: Cleverwise Redirect It » Trying to Figure Out How It Works

  • I’m sorry I am trying to figure out if this would work for me. I’ve tried a couple of things and not sure I am doing it correctly.

I have a site that has links to an external site but that site won’t be ready for a few days so we just want to links to redirect to an internal page with a “coming soon” message. Once the external site is ready we just want to be able to turn them all back on to go to the external site without having to go into each page, post, widget, etc.

The way I’m doing it just seems to still go to the external url.

Do you have more screenshots or a video or a more detailed explanation?

If you are linking straight to an external website this plugin (actually no plugin) will help.

For example: Site1.tld has a direct link to Site2.tld. The URL is going to Site2.tld so a visitor’s browser won’t contact Site1.tld at all.

If you link out to Site2.tld on Site1.tld using some kind of internal redirect then you have control using Site1.tld. For example: Site1.tld/goto/Site2.tld/page means a visitor’s browser must contact Site1.tld to get the redirect information to Site2.tld.

I am guessing you are just linking to Site2.tld from Site1.tld. If so you either change the links (not what want to do) or redirect incoming traffic on Site2.tld to static webpage.

In this case it is best to handle that at the web server level using the .htaccess file if you are on Apache. This does get complex but is the easiest way to redirect a lot of links that could point to anything on Site2.tld.

There are other ways to handle this but get more complex like doing a mass URL change in your WP database.
