Support » Themes and Templates » Troubleshooting: Replacing Designer-Customized Theme with Free Theme

  • Hi, all.

I am working on a blog that uses a theme customized by a web designer. The design was created 2 years ago and is now outdated. Because I have limited design background, I am trying to replace this theme with a free wordpress theme (Imbalance 2), and I have a couple of questions:

    1) If I install the new theme, will it automatically activate the theme?

    2) How can I determine whether replacing the customized theme will mess up any current features of the blog?

    Thanks so much!
    Laine

    1. No. You will have to activate it manually via Appearance -> Themes.

    2. You can preview the site using the new theme before it is activated by using the Live Preview link in Appearance -> Themes.

Each theme has its own customizations which may or may not transfer seamlessly when changing the theme. Either way, the only concern will be the widgets settings. You may want to search for a plugin that saves the widget settings prior to activating the new theme. Also remember to do a complete backup, both database and files. Good luck.

Either way, the only concern will be the widgets settings.

Widget settings are saved on a per-theme basis in the database.

    Thank you, everyone!
