Trouble with layout of front page/posts, and categories..help?

OK, newb here, but learning fast. My site and theme are up and running. I have arranged it so that the opening screen is a static page showing a video. I have redone the “nav bar” to link to other pages with my resume, contact, and “individual clips”. How do I make it so that other categories appear in the sidebar on my static front page, and thusly list the posts under the category name? What I want to end up with is my main “reel” video always on the opening front page and older and individual video clips available in the sidebar listed under “individual clips”.
Don’t need blogability, comments, or any of that.
Also, my navbar titles seem to have migrated to above the gray stripe where they were before. Take a peek if you like….www.kevingiffin.com
