Trouble importing blog from wordpress.com

I’ve gotta question…. I’m trying to migrate from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I have exported my content from wordpress.com and when I’m logged into my dashboard on wordpress.org, and I go to tools-> import-> and run the importer, then to import my blog file it says there is an error and “this doesn’t appear to be an WXR file.” I have no idea what that is or how to fix it and upload my blog content? Can anyone help me?

Try running the export again on WP.com.

Ok I exported again and tried to import but got the same error.

It sounds like you are probably trying to import the zip file that was generated. Make sure you have unzipped the export you generated with wordpress.com before trying to import.

1. Did you download a something.xml file from wordpress.com? If not, do the export from WP-ADMIN, not the Calypso back-end.

Update: I’ve found out that there are two ways to export from wordpress.com. One generates a zip file, the other an XML file.

If you have the zip file, unzip it locally and it will create one or more XML files. Import each of those.

For what it’s worth, I put in a feature enhancement request for the WP importer to automate this. I don’t know if anything will come of that.

That’s a great idea! Ok, so maybe you can help me with another issue. Once I unzipped the file, it created 3 XML files and I was able to import the first one with no problem. When I try to import the other two, it shows a blank white screen with “405 Not Allowed” at the top? Do you know what that means?

You’ll need to check with your hosting provider’s support on that one, it sounds like a security measure of theirs (likely mod_security) is configured a bit too strict.
