 * I am trying to get an api key. Every time I try to set it up it asks me to log
in. It will not accept the password I use for that blog. Do I need to set up
an account like it is telling me? This account is dfferent from my blog accounts
   then?

 * Just a quick question,
 * You got the API from your WordPress.Com account right and upon entering it, everything
   was fine, right?
 * And your problem is viewing your stats because it asks you to login?
 * If that is your problem, go to the WP Stats Panel again under your Dashboard
names Blog Stats and login with your WordPress.Com account details.

 * Kevin, No I never got that far. I am trying to install askismet. What I need
to know is whether or not I need to set up a new account. I already have a blog
on WordPress and I am trying to install that plugin into my existing blog.
 * Mikey, I followed your instructions and get the followng message where the API
   key should be
 * “Akismet is almost ready. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to
   work.”

 * thats where you **enter** the key. **thats NOT where you get the key from**.
follow the links he provided, and read them.

    1. go to wordpress.
com [http://wordpress.com/](http://wordpress.com/) 2. On the left hand side,
log in with your user name and password, if you don’t have an account create
one, theres no need to create a blog, just an account. 3. Once logged in to your
account, in the top right, click on your user name, this will take you into your
profile. Under where it says profile, you’ll see Your WordPress.com API key is:
API Key Don’t share your API key, it’s like a password. Simply copy and paste
this, maybe in a notepad .txt file to keep. 4. Use the API key in Akismet. It
will tell you it has been activated. Hope you get there. Mike.

 * That would be great, but for some reason, my username and email address are not
recognized any more! I can’t even request a password!!!!

 * Okay, I think you’re missing something vital here:
 * Your account on your own blog is not the same thing as an account on wordpress.
com. These are two different things.
 * You’re trying to login to another site entirely. If you don’t have an account
there, you have to create one. It can’t magically read your own site and know
   your password.

 * Thanks Otto. I understand that now, but the API key should show up on my own
blog account profile. I tried that first, as instructed. Not only is it not on
my profile page, but I can’t update my profile page either… could there be a
problem with my new install of 2.7? When I try to update my profile I get an
   Error message:
 * The requested URL /myURL/wp-admin/(EmptyReference!) was not found on this server.
 * I have posted this this problem too. I can’t see any missing files from the install
   in wp-admin.

 * OK. I created an account on WordPress.com and got an API key. Again, I get the
same NOT FOUND message when I try to update after entering the API key.
