Trouble adding new sorting method

We’re trying to add a new sorting method via a plugin using the reference code here: http://thecartpress.com/docs/developer-docs/plugin-development/how-to-add-sorting-methods/
It’s not working (tcp_sort_query is never called), so I’m wondering if this reference example is not compatible with the newer versions of TheCartPress.
If not, is there another way to add a new sorting method?
