• I installed NextGEN Gallery to evaluate if it would work for me. I am currently using the free version, but I have a problem. I am using a transparent watermark on a png and it does not work correctly. Instead of having a transparent background it has a solid color background.

Can someone please give me some advice?

@ryanmc – I was going to test with your sample image links but when I went to save your watermark is defaulted to a “jpeg” image which may be pointing to an issue with the watermark image not “saved” correctly as a transparent PNG file.

Although previewing the “jpeg” image makes it appear transparent, it will not be applied as transparent as jpeg images do not honor that property (thus your reason for going with PNG).

    Thanks!

Sorry about that. I think the image service I was using must have changed them. Here are the images from my own webserver

@ryanmc – Thanks for the fresh samples, I was able to use your transparent PNG image, as is, without any issue on my test site … and our server settings are nearly identical.

Are there any other active plugins that may be affecting this?

I am running this on a new install of wordpress. I am designing a new theme for my website, and so all I have is the theme and your plugin so far.

@ryanmc – Have you tried replacing the current watermark image with a fresh version?

I have tried everything I can think of. I deleted the watermark image, uploaded a new one. I also clicked the ‘Reset Options’ button. I even uninstalled the plugin, but nothing fixes it. I must be doing something wrong.

Did you use my original image?
Can you send me the result of my image with my watermark from your gallery?

I downloaded a different plugin and it works fine on png images, so at least I know it is not a problem with my server

@ryanmc – I checked your watermark image in the past and it worked fine, I just checked it again and it worked fine … sort of, maybe?!

I will leave this test post on my test server for a little while so you can see the watermarks as applied: http://nggpro.bycais.com/2014/08/watermarked-customer-images/

The first and third images were watermarked (your original “dolby” image from the link above is the third) … the first image looks great but your image shows the issue you were seeing on your site. At this time, I really cannot say what would cause this as I cannot see how the image being watermarked would affect the process of it being watermarked.

So you are seeing the same problem as me
    http://nggpro.bycais.com/2014/08/watermarked-customer-images/nggallery/image/dolby/

At least you can reproduce it, and now your devs can find out what is causing the problem. Please let me know when you have a fix. This is the only issue that is preventing me from using your software.

@ryanmc – The problem is, the exact same watermark image worked for the first image in that post; are you seeing this issue with every single image you watermark or only just that image. All other images I tested with in the past were fine when I used your watermark.

Have a look at this watermarked image: http://nggpro.bycais.com/2014/08/watermark-test/nggallery/image/dolby-1/

The watermark is transparent but there is something within your original image that is somehow tripping this up. There in lies the concern … although I cannot say if it is a NextGEN Gallery issue or an image issue as watermarking works fine elsewhere with different original images.

I am able to use this watermark, and the original image, with a different plugin, just fine.

In NextGen this problem occurs with all the png images I have tried.

    (@photocrati)

@ryanmc – This is very odd indeed … I can only recreate the issue with that one original image (“dolby”) where as all other images I have used have not had this problem.

I would suggest a Bug Report (http://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/ … please reference this topic) for this so we can start a conversation that allows us a bit more latitude to work with specific files.

We may even need to get a look under the page at your site to try to help you get this sorted out. We would likely need log in (and FTP) credentials for your WordPress installation as well, especially since you are seeing this with multiple different images in NextGEN Gallery.

    Thanks!

I use GIMP to create all my PGNs. It could be that GIMP does something different with its images. Maybe that is why all my PNGs are having problems.

    Plugin Contributor photocrati

    (@photocrati)

@ryanmc – That could be a possibility … I also see you have submitted a Bug Report on this as well (which I replied to a short while ago). We could keep the conversation there for the time being until we get further along in trying to sort out this issue.

    Thanks!

@ryanmc – A quick follow-up (for the community as well) … we seem to have found an issue with using a transparent PNG watermark image on a PNG formatted original image. The transparency of the watermark image is not being honored.

The temporary workaround would be to save your original images in JPG format as there are no issues at all when using a transparent PNG watermark image in these cases.

    Thanks!
