I’m having trouble pointing my indieweb.social account to my wordpress blog and I’m wondering if it is a formatting issue. On the migration page of indieweb.social, it wants me to give them my alias to my blog profile, which would be blog@sovereignweb.thecozy.cat. But first, in order for that to work, I need to create an alias that points to my old account from my WordPress ActivityPub settings.

From my ActivityPub settings, I add thesmallweb@indieweb.social but when I save it rebuilds the alias to look like http://thesmallweb@indieweb.social. I don’t understand why it rebuilds the format so it doesn’t match Mastodon’s alias structure, but anyways. I figured maybe for Activitypub, it needs the actual URL of my old profile, which is https://indieweb.social/@thesmallweb so that is what I replaced it with, and saved.

Then I went back to the migration page of my old account on Mastodon and entered my new alias in the migration page, which is blog@sovereignweb.thecozy.cat, but when I put that in it tells me it’s not the alias of this account. I really don’t understand how to get the alias feature on the ActivityPub plugin to connect with Mastodon’s account migration. That seems to be the point of having that feature in the plugin but it doesn’t work, unless I’m doing something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there! Yes, https://indieweb.social/@thesmallweb is what I would have recommended.

In my testing with Mastodon when we first built the feature, I ran into the same issue and then it would work a few minutes or hours later. It’s possible there is some internal caching of profile information that makes it keep failing, I’m not sure. The alias looks good, I encourage you to keep trying.

https://indieweb.social/users/thesmallweb is another version you could try, it’s what Mastodon uses as the actor ID.

@obenland so great news, after I added https://indieweb.social/users/thesmallweb as an alias on my new account, I as able to transfer all of my followers to my blog profile so that appears to be the key to getting it to work for blog profiles. I would have preferred my followers be transferred to my author profile, but it seems adding aliases to author profiles doesn’t appear to work at all. Anytime I add one and save the changes, they disappear upon refresh. Even when I tried adding https://indieweb.social/users/thesmallweb. That is okay though. My blog profile reblogs all of my author profile posts so it’s a solid work around that I’m satisfied with. 🙂 Thank you very much for mentioning the alternative actor ID! That did the trick.

I’m glad we got it figured out!

That shouldn’t happen. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll take a look!

@obenland No problem, and thank you! If you need someone to test after anything is changed let me know and I can give it another try.

Closing the loop: I just shipped 6.0.2 with a fix for the aliases in author profiles not saving. Thanks again for bringing that to my attention

@obenland No problem! Thanks for sending that out. I just tested it from my end and alias URLs appear to be saving now. 🙂 Appreciate your hard work on these fixes!

    All the best
