• Hello,

I am creating a new website that is going to replace a old one, and I am going to use that old DNS name. My question is that I am using Godaddy and to set up a WordPress account is requiring me to supply a DNS name to continue, but I don’t want to switch the DNS name until the site is ready. How can I proceed?

    Thanks,

  • In that case still specify the DNS name to setup WordPress. Then make an entry in the Windows hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) that points the domain to the new location.

When editing the Windows hosts file, you are “enforcing” your computer to redirect the domain to the new location, and this is specifically for your computer ONLY, without affecting the live website.

Once you’ve installed and tested the new WordPress website, delete the Windows Hosts file entry and redirect the DNS.

Thanks, but I don’t think this applies to the problem. The problem is that Godaddy will not let me create a WordPress account without a DNS name because the account has a dynamic IP. Oh and the hosting is Linux based.

So, I’d also been thinking on getting a free DNS name e.g., no-ip.com, use this a temp DNS and then when the website is done change it to the DNS I want to use. Could this work? Will this be a problem with permalinks or anything else? The new website will only contain several page a nothing else.

    I really appreciate the help!
    Thanks,
