Transfering a new theme etc from local to live site

    When I imported from the live site to my local version it transferred all the posts and images but it didn’t make the default local site look like the live site. The theme did not transfer and so I had to go looking for things to see what happened to them.

    When I get done updating the site I want to seamlessly transfer all my work back to the live site. Since it didn’t work coming to the local site I wouldn’t expect it to work going back to the live site.

    How do I get ALL of my changes to transfer from my local version to the live site.

    Importing only works for content – not for plugins or themes. You have to upload them separately. Alternatively, you could have a look at Moving_WordPress but you may find that far more complicated.

    So you are saying there is no easy seamless way to get the site looking and working exactly how I want it on my local version of the site and then simply transfer all the work to the live site?

    So, the work I’m doing is just proof of concept and I have to keep track of everything I do because I’m going to have to repeat it on the live site?

    The changes I’m making are a complete rebuild of the site using the existing content. Making those changes in real time will be certain to take enough time to disrupt the site.

    Yes – in that you cannot just upload a completed site as you might have been able to do with a static site. As WordPress sites are dynamic, moving a site from one place to another also involves moving and amending the database – which isn’t exactly a simple process.

    I was told in another thread, in this forum, this week that there is no way to transfer the database from a local site to the live site.

    Hi –
    The easiest way I have found is using the plugin – Duplicator. https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

    It is a little bit technical but not too hard to figure out.
