Transfer WordPress.com to .org? [Unique Problem]

Ok so I’ll first explain what I did, so it will hopefully help.
This is my first time making a site of any sort, so bear with me.

I created a website on wordpress.com.
When I created it, I bought myself a domain name, DavideMastracci.com

Upon doing this, I realized I wanted to install plugins, but realized I couldn’t. I discovered I needed to get my website hosted, and then transferred to the .org to do so.

So I got myself hosted on HostGator.
Then, I attempted to do the one click installation of wordpress.org to my main domain.

It was successful, and gave me the admin username and a password, but when I tried to log in to the url it told me to, I just got redirected to my main domain, with it telling me that I have the wrong log in info.

By buying a domain before transferring to wordpress.org, did I screw myself over? I just want wordpress.org on my domain.

Any help would be great.

You haven’t mentioned changing the Name Servers for your domain name to your HostGator hosting account. Nor waiting the time it takes for the Name Server changes to make their way around the world, up to 48 hours, but usually on major ISPs within 12 hours.

Just incase you have already changed the Name Servers of your domain name and still experience the same problem, are you sure you are typing the right admin login link in your browser, (e.g http://www.domainname.com/wp-login.php)?

Ok so it turns out I hadn’t fixed the name servers yet.
So I’ve done that now, about 15 hours ago.
How will I know when the full change has taken place?

“full change” – wait 72 hours. The problem is that what you experience is not the same as what someone else is experiencing, because they do not use the same Domain Name Server (DNS) as you do. Each DNS will be updated at a different time.

As for you personally, all that you can do is check from time to time, possibly clearing your browser cache and your personal computer’s copy of DNS records.

For what it is worth, I can see your site now.

Once you see it, you should be able to work on your web site, though weird problems do occasionally crop up if you happen to do something that relies on a DNS other than one your personal computer is using, typically at your Internet providers.

Ok. Well, the link I was given when I installed wordpress.org through host gator won’t let me log in.

And I can still log in to my word press.com account, with all the same settings. This should have changed right?

I just checked:
- http://davidemastracci.com/wp-admin is the correct URL to login
- admin is the ID
- if you can’t get your password to work, click on Lost Your Password?

When I try to use that link I get redirected to davidemastracci.wordpress.com/wp-login…

It works for me – as does http://davidemastracci.com/ Try emptying your browser cache.

Ok so I somehow got it to work with Chrome instead of Firefox.
Then I did some work, had to restart, and now I can’t get back in.
But I can’t remember exactly what I did,,,

I got a theme, made some pages, etc, and now it keeps showing me the old version?? Wtf.

And now it links me to a dead tumblr page.
I was screwing around yesterday and switched the DNS at host gator to a tumblr one, so maybe that’s why?

I changed it back now to point at the host gator site, will that fix it?

Ahhh it was working so well so shortly ago,.

Ok so just to update.
I changed the DNS A Record on Host Gator back to the info they gave me in their email (davidemastracci.com and then the ip address)

My name servers are also set to that info.

Yet I still get the tublr error page.

Do I just need to wait?

Every change to a DNS record can take up to 72 hours to “go around the world”.

Out of curiosity, I entered into the address bar: http://davidemastracci.com/wp-login.php and got the correct WP login to your site. Viewing the page source, the addresses are all http://davidemastracci.com/admin/etc…

I also entered into the address bar: http://davidemastracci.com/about/ and got the “About” page to your site. Viewing the page source, the addresses are all http://davidemastracci.com/etc…

This seems to be pointing to the correct site.

But, when I entered into the address bar just: http://davidemastracci.com/ or http://davidemastracci.com/index.php, I got the “error404” page. Viewing the page source of the 404 page, the addresses are all http://davidemastracci.com/etc…

Are you missing your index.php, perhaps?
I’m using the latest version of Firefox.
