In 1.5/default, does anyone know why this line in single.php:

    or [a href="[?php trackback_url(display); ?]"[trackback[/a] from your own site.

greater than/less than signs changed to [] so that they will be displayed here

Would output a permalink instead of a trackback URI?

I've searched the forums, but can't get enough results back to find some of the old posts. And the codex doesn't say anything about this. I've seen hints that say that the 1.5 has been updated....but don't want to reload the whole thing since I've already customized so much of the site.

Any help would be most appreciated.

btw, for an example, click here and then click on "Trackback from your own site."

Purpose is most likely due to a regular complaint (around here anyways) about trackback URLs being far too long on a page when displayed, especially with lengthly custom permalinks. So:

...can get a little heady when placed in the narrow content column of some themes. Of course, it assumes those looking to grab the trackback URL will know enough to right-click on it and copy.

Okay, Kafkaesqui--thanks for answering. What you're saying is what's happening is not a mistake, but part of the plan. I get it now. Maybe I'll add instructions about the right-click to my single.php page, since this is different from the way that other blog software (and older verisons of WP) handle the trackback.

    Thanks again for the response.
