trackback problem.

  • A friend is having a problem with trackbacks and I can’t figure it out.

    The site is http://www.stoptheaclu.com

I went to trackback to one of their posts using the Wizbang manual trackbacking system (http://www.aylwardfamily.com/content/tbping.asp). (Putting the trackback URL in my WP write area doesn’t work and I’ve given up trying, doing it manually is fine for me.)

Usually when I do this I put the trackback URL in the top area of the form, fill out the rest and hit submit trackback. More times than not I get the successful ping response and sure enough when I go look at the post I’m trackbacking too, it’s there.

When I went to do this with one of my friends posts, instead of the successful or failed ping, my friends website loaded instead.

I think it’s because index.php is in the trackback URL .. but he said he’s removed that from the permlink syntex and it still doesn’t work, he tried it via Heloscan.

Is the index.php suppose to be part of the URL ? Could that be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.

  • Is that a WordPress blog? It looks more like MT.

index.php can be part of the URL, if the blog owner wants (or needs) it. The presence of index.php ought not cause problems for trackbacks. Lots of people use index.php in their permalinks, and I’ve not heard of this problem before.

Two additional trackback resources you can try:
    http://www.redalt.com/External/pingomation.php
    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/TestTrack/index.php

The problem I’m having is when people try to send a trackback it gives them an error and does not show up on my site. I’m pretty ignorant with code, so whoever helps get this fixed will have to explain the problem to me in simple terms.

    It is a wordpress blog.

I used the RedAlt Tracback Tool, and received this:
    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:17:23 GMT
    Server: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_log_bytes/0.3 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/4.3.11 mod_ssl/2.8.19 OpenSSL/0.9.7d
    X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.11
    Expires: Mon, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT
    Last-Modified: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:17:23 GMT
    Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate
    Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0
    Pragma: no-cache
    X-Pingback: http://stoptheaclu.com/xmlrpc.php
    Connection: close
    Content-Type: text/html

The trackback does not seem to display on your site. Do you have access to the server’s error logs? If so, is there anything in there?

Can’t get to the server access at work…its blocked.

There were some trackback bugs at various points. Is it the latest version? (1.5.1.3)

Thanks for helping Jay out guys — I hope we can get this figured out for him.

Hmm. I’ve been having sporadic problems, and using the RedAlt tool above, tackbacks to “http://chasingthewind.net” fail, but trackbacks to “http://chasingthewind.net/” succeed. That trailing slash makes a difference.

Is there anyway I can fix that on my end?

Trackbacks are like comments, they are left on specific posts, so there is no reason for you to send a trackback to your root domain, you would send it to a post’s URL instead.
