  • I get tons of comment spam, directed at using the traceback URI. What is the easiest & best way to remove this from the comment area?

    delete wp-trackback.php from your install.

    You can remove the link to the trackback url by deleting references to <?php trackback_url() ?> in your template files.

    However, you’ll still likely to get trackback, pingback, and comment spam, because spammers usually guess the url anyway.

    So more robust options include disabling pings and trackbacks under Options > Discussion or installing and using a combination of anti-spam plugins, such as Akismet and Spam Karma 2.

    deleting wp-trackback.php will prevent trackbacks from being recieved. end of story .. NO need for disabling them if that file is not there.

    And like filosofo said you will want to remove the reference to the url within your comments.php

    Once thats done — NO trackbacks, none, nada, nilch.

    Thank you for the excellent response.

    I found a comments.php file in folder wp-content/themes/classic. Is this the only file I need to change?

    Within this file I see a number of references to trackback. As I’m not a programmer, I don’t know exactly how to change this code:

    <cite><?php comment_type(__(‘Comment’), __(‘Trackback’), __(‘Pingback’)); ?> <?php _e(‘by’); ?> <?php comment_author_link() ?> — <?php comment_date() ?> @ “><?php comment_time() ?></cite> <?php edit_comment_link(__(“Edit This”), ‘ |’); ?>

    ” rel=”trackback”><?php _e(‘TrackBack URI’); ?>

    If you’re using the classic theme, then delete this from comments.php:

    <a href="<?php trackback_url() ?>" rel="trackback"><?php _e('TrackBack <abbr title="Uniform Resource Identifier">URI</abbr>'); ?></a>

    and this from your comments-popup.php file:

    <p><?php _e("The <acronym title=\"Uniform Resource Identifier\">URI</acronym> to TrackBack this entry is:"); ?><em><?php trackback_url() ?></em></p>
