Totally new to website building, :-(

Hello All!!!

Im going to be asking some really simple and basic questions here, sorry to be a pain.
I’ve just rented a small amount of webspace and bought a domain name from a supplier and after this it all seems to go wrong. :-(.
Im sat here with loads of books infront of me and 15 tabs open, but I cant seem to work out how to get a database set up. I use mac (OSX 10.6).
Could any of you guys/gals help me out with some basic pointers or links, and what tools I require? Any help at-all would be great.
