Total number of adsense units (8 or 3)

Hi All,
Based on this page posted by google I have a query:
https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/1346295?hl=en#Ad_limit_per_page
Number of adsense units:
-Up to three AdSense for content units
-Up to three link units
-Up to two search boxes

Does this mean 3 display, 3 text units, and 2 search boxes (a total of 8) can be places in a page or total 3 units(combination of display, text unit or search box) can be placed on the page.
The plugin made by google https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/google-publisher allows only total 3 units to be placed on the page.
Can any representative or adsense expert provide their opinion so that no one violates any policy?
