Total Newbie Question. Stand Alone Forum – How?

I know Im going to sound really dim but I am very new to WP. I have one WP site and just added a forum, but its a part of my WP website and I want it to be a stand alone forum? I bet this is so easy to sort out but I just dont know how to go about it. I know I will have to register a domain name but how would I make the forum go onto that name? *cringe*

Just include a link to the new forum domain in your menu, sidebar, posts, pages, template files….

Thanks but it wasnt that. I have to add it as an addon domain to make it a separate site.

What forum software are you using? bbPress? phpBB?
Install it wherever you want and add a link on your WP site. Sounds reasonable?
