About a month ago, I noticed my “top posts” widget disappeared from the footer. When I re-applied the widget to the footer, I only saw the last post. Googling the topic, I saw that sometimes the statistics get reset (for whatever reason) and that the statistics need some time to rebuild.

Now after a month, the recent posts widget still only shows the most recent post. I noticed a similar post on the support page about 11 months ago involving changing the jetpack source but I’m relunctant to make any changes there, plus, that problem has surely been fixed in later releases.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Steve,

Do you happen to have a link to the support thread you mention above? I’d like to take a look.

I did notice, that your site had not synced with WordPress.com lately, and after I initiated a sync, your widget is now showing 2 posts (vs the 1 it displayed before the sync.)

That said, how do you have your widget configured? (i.e., what do you have your max posts set at, as seen here: https://jetpack.com/support/extra-sidebar-widgets/top-posts-pages-widget/)?

Please note also that the widget, by default, only shows the top post(s) from the past 24-48 hours, not of all time.

    Best,
    Cena

    Thanks for helping Cena,

The support thread mentioned is https://wordpress.org/support/topic/popular-posts-not-working-after-update/ .

Also, since I posted this morning, I’ve been tinkering w/Cloudfront (now enabled) and trying to iron out implementing SSL (more headaches but that’s another thread), so my current setup is not really stable at the moment. I do believe that the problem could be because my cache is being wiped out and it takes time for the stats to re-build.

At least, that’s what I’m thinking right now. Nevertheless, I do appreciate your looking into it – 4 eyes are better than 2!

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the update (and link)!

It’s entirely possible (“I do believe that the problem could be because my cache is being wiped out”), if not likely, but do let us know once you’ve stabilized your setup whether you’re continuing to have issues with the Top Posts widget, and we’ll be happy to dig in deeper.

    Best,
    Cena

I’ve stabilized my site which is now https://amazoniabookshoppe.com but the problem with the “top posts and pages widget” still persists. It’s been several days so I really don’t think it’s a caching issue.

    Thanks for the help!

Update – now “There are no posts to display. Want more traffic?”

    What?

Okay, stats seem to be accumulating again. I guess I need to figure out what is clearing the cache? Perhaps it has something to do with cache expirations?

    Hi Steve,

I ran some diagnostics on your Jetpack connection and it doesn’t appear that it has a good one: https://jetpack.com/support/debug/?url=https://amazoniabookshoppe.com/

“Unknown error” – super helpful, right? 🙂

I can see more information on that page, and the ‘real’ error appears this way: cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 5000 milliseconds with 0 bytes received

I also see that you’re using Cloudflare, so let’s make sure that’s setup correctly first: https://jetpack.com/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/configure-jetpack-cloudflare/

Once you’ve done that, check your Jetpack connection again. If it says anything other than “Everything looks great!” then there’s still an issue.

The cURL 28 error often means that your web host is blocking or limiting some connections Jetpack needs in order to work correctly.

Could you please contact your web host and ask them to make sure  that:

Connections to and from *.wordpress.com are whitelisted. In terms of IP ranges, the following ranges need to be fully whitelisted:

    185.64.140.0/22
    2a04:fa80::/29

Also, all of the IPs listed at http://whois.arin.net/rest/org/AUTOM-93/nets.

Please let us know how that goes!

    Best,
    Cena

All I did was go make myself a sandwich LOL and when I returned to my PC, ran the diagnostic mentioned in your post – I received this:

    Everything looks great!
All tests have passed for amazoniabookshoppe.com and your Jetpack powered site looks good to go! If you’re still experiencing trouble working with Jetpack, please check out the following resources:

I noticed that there is a new release of Jetpack (5.7.1) currently being installed on my sites, perhaps that had something to do with this particular hiccup?

Anyway, everything seems to be working okay, I now have 3 top posts in the widget.

I’ll go ahead and mark this as “resolved”.

    Thanks for the assistance Cena!
