Too many open files

Admittedly, I just got started with this plugin today, but I am unable to get a complete backup either on line or by email as I keep getting an error that too many files are open. Anyone seen this?

Hi,
I can see this happening in a very deep directory tree or some kind of loop. Can you give the full error including the file path from the event log?
Or is this a “filesystem failure”? How long does the backup run for before failing?

No, it only runs a couple minutes and it does complete,k but without these 42 files backed up.

Hi,
It looks like your host might have a really low limit on open files. I’ll see if we can implement a workaround you can use and post back in a few days with a test version if ready.

Unfortunately, I have no control over the server settings as I am a student and the site in question is hosted by my school. I am taking a WordPress class as part of my degree program for a degree in programming with an emphasis on web development.
I have actually been in the computer industry for over thirty years but have never had a degree, so I am seeking one late in life.

Hi Louis,
Perfectly understand that you have no control over the server. I’m not asking you to change anything about that. I’m going to make a version of the plugin for you that will not open as many files, and keep the open file count low, and make that open file count configurable.
It’ll eventually be rolled into an update so everyone gets the benefit and ability to change the count.
Will take a few days to get it finished but I’ll give you a link to it once I finish testing it.

Make sure you uninstall the previous version – it might be trying to run both.
Just remove and delete both versions if both are showing, and then install this new one only.Jason

I set the default limit to 200 – maybe a bit too high I think I’ll drop it.
If you go to General Settings, then in the address bar of your browser, change the end of the URL from §ion=settings to §ion=advanced
On the page that loads, at the bottom tick the checkbox next to “handle limit”, and change the value from 200 to 50 and save.
Then try a backup. If it still fails, drop it to 25 and try. Hopefully you’ll be able to find the point at which it works. Let me know what value you needed I’d be interested in knowing.
