I’m not sure I understand what is being asked here. These are two separate buttons.
1) Paste text is used to allow you to paste rich formatted text or paste plain text.
2)Kitchen sink allows you to see further options for formatting.
Which is it you are having issues with?
Thank you for your reply. I am a very newby at this and still finding it all very strange.
I have lost the Kitchen Sink button. I haven’t a clue what I have done. I do know that the Kitchen Sink plug in is installed and active.
I am using WP 3.9.1, but do not know what theme I am using.
Can you take a screenshot of your editor and show me? The Kitchen Sink is not a plugin. It’s baked into WordPress and TinyMCE.
I’m sorry, I can’t see how to attach a file to this post. What I can tell you though, when I use the toggle button on the top right, it shows the bottom menu, but kitchen sink is not there any more
Here is an image that is pointing to the show/hide button for the kitchen sink. I currently have the kitchen sink hidden. Do you have this button?

Here is the kitchen sink shown.

Is your editor behaving differently? Sorry, this was the easiest way I could think of determining the issue.
Thank you I have all of that, but where is the icon to import MS Word with formatting?
Ah! That function has been automated and removed as an option. See this post here explaining it in detail: http://thenextweb.com/dd/2014/03/25/wordpress-com-now-strips-formatting-text-pasted-microsoft-word-automatically/
This was done in one of the last updates to WordPress core. Hope this helps!
Edit: This link does not describe what I meant to confer. See post below.
Sorry, that actually wasn’t the best link. That referred to WP.com not .org. Here is the release notice for WP 3.9 that explains more. http://wordpress.org/news/2014/04/smith/
