    Hi everyone,

I have a test site and have been a WordPress fan for a few months…I just love WordPress..and have been using all my available time to understand this “WordPress” so far and honestly I’m loving it. But I’m still a noob..yep 😉

    My situation is this:

Just uploaded WP 2.0.7 and a huge number of plugins…I havent installed the REAL blog yet, by running install.php
So the files are sitting on the server now. I was going to install WP when WP 2.1 came out…

Now that WP 2.1 is out, I am at a crossroads, should I just throw out the WP 2.0.7 install and plug in WP 2.1 rather than install WP 2.0.7 and then upgrade LATER on? Of course I’m not surprised that there are issues with WP 2.1, but the fact is my blog hasnt even started,(which is not the case with others, I’m on a clean slate) so which option would be the best for my situation? I really cant wait to write my first post and publish it..:live:-)

Would like opinions here, as to use WP 2.1 or WP 2.0.7 and then worry later about upgrading?

  • If you haven’t started blogging yet, then go with 2.1. Then the future upgrades will be much cleaner, having fewer potential problems that can occur if an upgrade isn’t done properly.

My advice is exactly the opposite of the previous poster’s: if the very marginally expanded functionality of 2.1 isn’t anything you really need, stick with the 2.0 branch which will be fully supported until 2010. And count the problem threads in the last week for 2.1…. must be hitting about .5k by now….

Much of the problems seem to have to do with upgrades. Someone not doing an upgrade shouldn’t experience those.

Wrong. Among other problems, the situation with plugins is not good. This was simply another rushed release with not enough testing.

    Nothing new there.

My experience so far of WP 2.1 is its rather much faster than 2.0.7
That’s a big improvement for me but I’m sitting down for the moment, well actually its been days…maybe things can clear up?

I am a fan of Nybbles SideBar Modules, and it looks like SBM wont be working on WP 2.1 at least till the author fixes it, but he has said he is busy so…

I really liked SBM. (Side Bar Modules)

Also, Advanced Wysiwig plugin doesnt work in 2.1 among others. The theme I had been customizing, doesnt take too well to Sidebar widgets, but does fine so far on SBM (which doesnt work on 2.1)

So in conclusion, should I go with 2.0.7 and then maybe upgrade in 6 months time? If WP 2.0 branch will be supported till 2010, then is it really necessary? I dont want to regret my decision cos the situation of a live site is not the same as a test site ;]

Although upgrading later will be harder than installing it clean now.

I’ve been playing with 2.0.6 to set up a new site for someone and went ahead and set up a 2.1 site.

Something messed up the 2.1 site, but I’m determined to get a 2.1 site up for him. Why? Because he’s not going to tinker with the site too much once it’s up and he won’t know the difference between 2.0 and 2.1.

What are your goals for your blog? If you have made many customizations for your site or rely on a log of plugins that aren’t tested yet can you go with less customization or plugins on 2.1 for a while?

For me, the biggest problem in setting up the demo site locally and moving to the 2.1 live site was figuring out all the tag changes which no one mentioned in the “hey 2.1 is out go update now” rush. Now that I’ve spent oh about 5 hours fixing the sidebar, I know the 2.1 site will be “future proof”.

In particular 2.1’s new way for handling links in the blogroll is a major issue: you may want to consider the hassle of eventually having to change your mysql data over.

OTOH, the 2.1 site I did set up just self-destructed when 2 plugins were activated and changed the htaccess file. So the moral seems to be “pick your poison”. Good luck what ever you decide to do.
