I think it might be time to crowd source this question. I’m looking for a good portfolio theme that I can use to showcase my comic books and storyboard panels. I’ve not found quite what I’m looking for yet. I think what I need is relatively simple. Then again, I clearly don’t know much about this, but I have a couple friends willing to help me get set up of I can find something that looked nice. Would you be so kind as to suggest some themes that can do all this with?

    Okay, what do I need?

On home page, I need a large feature image space with slideshow.  Under I need thumbnails that can be clicked on (with a mouse on a PC or Mac) or tapped (with a finger on a tablet) that will take you to the “category” that thumbnail represents.

Each category page would be similar in appearance to the home page.  Large feature image with slideshow on top, with thumbnail images that can be tapped or clicked to take you to the “project” or “client” that thumbnail represents.

If its a “client” then again the page would be similar in appearance to the home and category pages.  Large feature image with slideshow, and under would be thumbnail images to take you to the “projects”

Now, “project” pages are different in design and function from the “home” “category” and “client” pages.  See, I am a comic book artist and a storyboard artist mostly.  I rarely do work that is just ONE thing, ONE drawing, ONE panel.  I draw dozens of things, sometimes HUNDREDS of things that are meant to be seen together.  Books, storyboards, ad campaigns, collections of concept images and production art.  So what I need to see on the project page is a cascading set of thumbnail tiles.  Then, when you click on a thumbnail, a light wave-type reader window should pop up to show you a close up of that thumbnail.  Also, with my storyboards, it’s important that there be a clickable image link to video content, be it YouTube or Vimeo, so visitors can see the end result of my production work.

Bear also in mind that on each page there should be a place for me to write an explanation of what visitors are looking at, and there should be basic navigation tools and links.

Thats it.  Home page with Category thumbnails–> Category page with Client thumbnails–> Client page with Project thumbnails –> Project page with Image thumbnails–> Images in image media viewer.

Can anybody recommend a WordPress theme that can do this?

Note, I bought two very nice themes, Photography from Theme Foundry and Cleanr from Mojo Themes, and hey are very nice, but I can’t quite get them to do what I want them to do.  I really liked the LOOK of the Cleanr theme home page.  But ultimately, and quite possibly because I don’t know what I’m doing, neither has given me what I want.

I really NEED to get this figured out quickly.  My web presence is embarrassing and I won’t really be able to apply for jobs illustrating and storyboarding and designing until I get this figured out.  Ideally, there would be a ready made theme that I could just simply install and load media into, but if there is, I have not found it.

So I’m asking the Internet, can you help me find what I’m looking for?  I need names, demos, examples.  Also, I am not a web developer.  There’s a limit to what I can do, I already find this whole project excruciatingly difficult.  So a ready made theme would be much better for me than dramatically redesigning an existing theme, adding on a lot of plug-ins, editing and diagnosing HTML.

Anyway, Internet, can you help me find what I’m looking for?

What you’ve described here is a job specification, a rather detailed one at that.

This is a support forum for WordPress and volunteers like you and I usually answer questions such as “Why does this not work?” or “Software go boom! HELP!”. Topics like that. 😉

Have you considered perusing the tag filter for themes here?

With a test WordPress installation you can download and install as many as you’d like till you find what you ar looking for. If that doesn’t work them consider looking at the theme offerings from the commercial theme provider list.

There is nothing wrong with a commercial theme that is GPL compatible and has good support from the vendor.

I really NEED to get this figured out quickly.

This may seem like a trite reply but it’s not: please consider posting to instead of here.

Your WordPress installation has value to you. Just as you would home repairs that are outside of your ability you may want to consider seeking professional assistance.

I didn’t really know that what I was writing was a job specification. I’m really new to this and I’m just asking around to see what is out there and to learn what people have to say. So far, when I have looked at theme demos, and they look fine, but when I load them, they don’t have the functions I’m actually looking for. I didn’t know this would be so advanced!

I don’t mind seeking professional assistance. This is for my work, so doing so is a work expense, same as buying a pencil, tube of paint, a computer or a copy of Photoshop. So a good commercial theme would be acceptable,

What I was hoping for was that maybe someone would be able to say, “Hey, look at such-and-such theme, it can do all that.” Then I’d go to the company that made that theme, pay my bucks, install it and hooray! I’d rather not have to have a custom site professionally built from scratch if there were an acceptable commercial theme available already.

I will look through those links you sent, maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for.

It’s very unlikely that you (or anyone) will ever find a theme that has exactly what you want (unless you only want a very simple site). That’s partly because your needs are not likely identical to anyone else’s. But it’s also because that’s how WP is (intentionally) built — so that you can customize a theme/site to be just how you want it.

If you don’t want to hire out the whole job, I’d suggest finding a theme that has the basic look and feel that you want — and then start learning how to add functionality via plugins and/or modifying the theme to make desired changes.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you start doing the work yourself:

These forums only support the free themes on the repository Jan linked to above, so if you get a theme elsewhere, make sure it has good support.

Also, not all themes out there are of good quality/ethics – this may be illuminating:

It’s strongly recommended to make any changes to a theme using a Child Theme — that way your changes won’t be overwritten when the theme is updated.

Okay, then can you recommend a good “Child Theme”? And what plug-ins should I look at, considering my description? Light wave for the viewer, probably, what about a plug in that will make a page of cascading thumbnails?

Please read the page about child themes — they are not stand alone themes — but a way to make changes without changing the parent theme files.

Some of those features will be in many themes — so look for the theme first.

You probably want to visit, and post a listing, if you need this level of customization more quickly than you would be able to learn how to modify a Theme yourself.

That said, if you’re willing to take the time to learn, you can easily implement your requirements yourself. 🙂
