Support » Plugin: Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth » Tiled mosaic images randomly not working

Recently I noticed some of the images on my site are not loading the thumbnail. Checked my Media library and the image is working there. When adding my images to a Post I always use the tiled mosaic gallery.

The odd thing is that I’m seeing this happen to older posts now (example: see the included link, image below “colors were starting to pop” text doesnt show). This worked when I originally made the Post and I’m not sure when it broke. All other images are still working.

After reading many threads here, I’ve tried using Health Check (images work), disabling add-ons one-by-one (did not fix), and other troubleshooting. It seems most of the time broken images are served from i0.wp.com server and working images are from another Jetpack server (i1, i2).

Only other recent changes are that I added SSL. Created 301 permanent redirect so I don’t think it’s a mixed content issue. Can’t figure out why only some of these are breaking at random.

Any help is much appreciated, it’s starting to drive me crazy. Thanks!

    Hi there,

I checked and noticed that there are quite a few errors in the dev console when on your site – so I am sure there is something causing this issue. However, I see the image from the link you provided on this end.

I want to see if you can try a few things:

    • Disable your plugins to see if there are any conflicts (wanted to clarify if disabling add-ons one-by-one was referring to plugins, extensions, or something else)
    • Disable Site Accelerator from your dashboard: Jetpack → Settings→ Performance See if that results in the images reappearing.
    • Let me know what you find, if anything.

      Thanks,

    Hi darnelldibbles,

Which browser are you using to see those console errors? Latest versions of Firefox and Chrome both give me different results than yours. Most of my existing errors (on my view) are related to a theme font being loaded as HTTP but nothing else. Now I’m more curious…

To clarify, yes I have disabled plugins in WP admin one-by-one. Images can be seen only when I turn off Site Accelerator (or Jetpack entirely) but that defeats the purposed of using tiled mosaic gallery types.

If I re-upload images and edit the post, the images also appear again. I just created a new post today and had to fix in this method. First image was being served from i0.wp.com and upon re-upload was being served from i1.wp.com.

This only started very recently, like the past couple of days. Not sure I have touched any plugins or WP settings during that time as I have been busy creating the content.

That screenshot is Chrome’s dev console, I think the error my colleague saw are because AdBlock is on in his browser.

Are you running anything to block direct image downloading or hotlinking?

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

    Hi James,

Thanks I was wondering how my console was so far off! 🙂

    Some things I have checked:

    • Not running anything to block image downloading
    • Disabled Plugins one by one, none of them are stopping this from working
    • Changed theme to several other top themes including default Twenty 19/18/17/etc.
    • Checked with my web host, doesn’t appear anything is being blocked on that end
    • WP version 5.1.1, PHP 7.3.3, MariaDB 10.1.38 so I should have the latest versions

Turning off Jetpack Site Accelerator allows the images to show. This however defeats the purpose because I believe that is required for running Tiled Mosaic galleries (which is what I want).

    Any other ideas?

So, I’m taking a look at https://adammartin.space/2018-interstate-state-park-part-2/ now, and I see images loaded from our CDN: https://cld.wthms.co/RrW8qu

Were you able to resolve the issue?

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

No I was not able to resolve. Some images load but not all of them. On that link if you search for text “but colors were starting to pop” the image directly below does not load. This worked when originally posted and images are randomly disappearing after some combination of the latest updates to Jetpack or WP.

I’m still looking for any fixes as I want to continue using tiled mosaic galleries, however I am also now checking for alternatives to eliminate Jetpack. Can’t have my site breaking randomly, its a deal breaker.

It still seems to be working for me: https://cld.wthms.co/sCdHMd

What is the full source URL of the image that doesn’t load there for you?

    Mine is https://i0.wp.com/adammartin.space/wp-content/uploads/20180706-ISP-LakeODalles2-01.jpg?w=726&h=408&ssl=1

Thanks for sharing screenshots. That is strange how it works from your end but not mine.

I put together an Imgur gallery with more details. Can’t get it loading on any of my PCs (I’m in IT, lots of access to different machines and have clean OS builds daily). Doesn’t work on phone. Network doesn’t matter – fails on corporate, home, public, and LTE.

I’m noticing this is starting to remove images from some of my other older posts. It’s breaking my blog one image at a time and I don’t know which will fail next.

Hm, that 400 error when viewed directly is interesting. That would suggest that we were unable to fetch the image for our CDN.

That can happen in either if hotlink protection is blocking the images (which isn’t the case here), or if the server connection is interrupted, which can happen if you’re on an overloaded shared server.

If you have a post with only 2 or 3 images on it, do those also consistently fail for you?

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

Most of my posts contain more than 3 images so it’s hard to say.

When I first published these posts images work fine. I only happened to notice by accident that old posts are losing images that once worked. I too suspected it’s the CDN causing load failure but I can’t see what is happening on that end and have no control over it.

Strangely it’s always the same image – in the post I linked to it’s always that same sunset photo. The failure doesn’t “jump” to other images over time. Maybe did the CDN lose a server or has bad DNS/settings on one server?

Checked with my hosting provider (namecheap). They white-listed modsecurity rules but images still don’t load. Server load looks OK, nothing else explicitly blocked from their end.

I’m still baffled and open to any suggestions.

Hm, it’s just the one photo? Have you tried first re-saving the image in your image editor of choice (most have an “export for web” or similar option) and re-uploading it with a different file name (that will make sure the CDN treats it as a new image)?

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

I think I fixed this in one post by re-uploading which worked. That is quite the tedious fix and so far I don’t know if this is spreading or not. The same images on each post are missing on each page load (i.e. it doesn’t “jump” between images, always same image gone).

I spent a good portion of the day auditing the entire site. Of 211 total posts there are now 30 with missing images. I would say about 50 of the posts don’t use tiled mosaic galleries from before I was using Jetpack. Therefore roughly 20% of my posts have images missing that once worked.

Going to check each of them to see when an image goes missing which CDN URL it has. First couple are all i0.wp.com. Going to take some time.

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

Checking broken images now. Doesn’t seem to discriminate between i0, i1, and i2 as i previously thought. Using my sample page from the original post, broken image path is:

    https://i0.wp.com/adammartin.space/wp-content/uploads/20180706-ISP-LakeODalles2-01.jpg?ssl=1

If I remove the ?ssl=1 the image loads from the same URL. This is repeatable for other broken images. Is this possibly something wrong with SSL from the CDN?

    Thread Starter adamscottmartin

    (@adamscottmartin)

Working on a new post. Uploaded new images and one of them broke immediately in preview of the post draft. Once again if I remove the ?ssl=1 it loads fine.

    https://i0.wp.com/adammartin.space/wp-content/uploads/2019-04-14-14_18_59-Wequiock-Falls-_-Gaia-GPS.png?ssl=1

Re-uploaded a copy of the file and verified 2nd image loads fine. New file has a longer filename intentionally to show it’s not my format causing this.

    https://i1.wp.com/adammartin.space/wp-content/uploads/2019-04-14-14_18_59-Wequiock-Falls-_-Gaia-GPS-1.png?ssl=1

Photo looks fine in my Media section so it appears CDN is breaking this.

Yeah, these are all working for me, which is odd:

I suppose there is one thing we haven’t tried yet, troubleshooting your browser.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
