The Twenty Fourteen Extended plug-in is causing more problems. With it activated, I can’t align text around images at all. When I try, the images (if they’re left aligned, for example) get pushed off the page and under the left sidebar. They went back to normal when I deactivated the plug-in.

I set up a gallery without the plug-in, there is no navigation between images (there’s supposed to be an arrow to move between images).

When I activated the plug-in, there is still no navigation between images. And still the option to “Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic” does not appear in settings.

I’m frustrated. Could the problem be with the hosting provider? The other site is with a different provider and it’s worked perfectly. This one is a mess.

Thanks for your help in advance.

with respect to aligning text, I reset the page width and it looks ok now. The problem seems happen when this is activated: “Check to show full width single post”. So basically full width for single posts is not an option on this site.

    And the gallery…. 🙁

I can’t figure out what is wrong. I have no other plugins activated. I have deleted and re-installed the plugin. In settings/media, the “Tiled Galleries/Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic” option doesn’t even show up.

    * “Tiled Galleries/Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic” is a Jetpack feature.

I set up a gallery without the plug-in, there is no navigation between images (there’s supposed to be an arrow to move between images).

    * Without which plugin? The gallery carousel also requires the Jetpack plugin to be installed and activated.

with respect to aligning text, I reset the page width and it looks ok now. The problem seems happen when this is activated: “Check to show full width single post”. So basically full width for single posts is not an option on this site.

    * That is one of the nuances of the design – not every setting of the plugin will suit everyone’s needs. To have a wider content area you’ll have to compromise on not having the left sidebar if you want to align images.

Now in order to find the problem and help you fix it we need to do a few things….

    1) Fourteen Extended plugin deactivated and Jetpack activated. Remember to first set all of Fourteen Extended settings to default i.e delete any values entered and uncheck any boxes checked and save.

    2) At this point check if the gallery works – if not the visit the Customizer, do an action like check and uncheck a box to activated the save button, click the save button and exit the Customizer.

    3) Now check your site – is the gallery working as it should?

If after step 3 the gallery is working then that eliminates Jetpack as the problem.

Then we need to check if Fourteen Extended is the culprit – so go ahead and activate it and check the site, still working?.

If things are still working then visit the Customizer and take an action i.e. check the box to center align the site, save and exit – once again check to see if things are still working or not.

Continue the above process to a point where things stop working and let me know so I can investigate further.

Once we have figured the gallery issue out we can then move on to the rest of the problems and hopefully get them resolved for you.

Thanks very much for taking on my case.
Of course – you’re right about JetPack. I forgot to mention that part. I deactivated it because it was messing with the featured content/sticky posts appearing at the top on the front page – they disappear when JetPack is activated. I wasn’t using the Featured tag, just sticky post, and they looked great at the top of the front page. Ideal for my friends needs. When I used Featured tags (I also tried changing the tag name) + sticky posts, they also disappeared when JetPack was activated.

I followed your steps and here’s what happened:

    1) done. FTE deactivated, JetPack activated
    2) done (I unchecked the tagline box, saved, then checked it and saved again
    3) Went to media settings. The option “Tiled Galleries/Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic” still doesn’t show up.
    4) The sticky posts on the front page disappeared

    I repeated this:
    1) both JetPack and FTE deactivated. Bare Bones.
    2) This time I unchecked media/settings/Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders.
    3) The sticky posts disappeared. When I checked the box again, they did not come back. Gone. Rats.
    4) This time I tried adding a new gallery. Still no navigation between images.

Is there anything else I can do to test? But it seems that the basic gallery that comes with the Twenty Fourteen theme doesn’t work, and when JetPack is activated the tiled image option doesn’t appear.

    Thanks

Sorry to hear its still not working yet.

There have been reports on issues caused by Jetpack on the featured content and unfortunately Twenty Fourteen itself has a peculiar issue with resetting its transients.

These are being addressed by the respective teams and we should have updates to both soon.

Let me do some more testing on a live server with the theme and both Jetpack and FE plugins and see what I can figure out for you – will post back as soon as I can.

    No problem at all.

Just going through the tests and wanted to check with you on your Jetpack settings.

Without activating Fourteen Extend could I ask you to activate Jetpack and connect your site to WordPress.com. Then check and confirm that you have both the Tiled Galleries and Carousel modules active – once done, verify if the issue with the check box for “Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic.” is still there?

Also if you could retest the Gallery post and check on the second issue will appreciate your feedback.

My test post is here: http://wpdefault.com/test-gallery/ and I don’t seem to have any issues with both plugins activated.

    Thanks,

    Hi Zulf,

I’m an idiot – I didn’t activate the “tiled galleries” in JetPack. Sorry about that.

With Jetpack activated (and Fourteen Extended turned off), the tiled galleries worked. The featured posts on the home page disappeared.

I de-activated both Jetpack and Fourteen Extended, and added a new test gallery (http://www.fionareid.ca/files/tour-photo-gallery). There is no navigation between images, each image has to be opened separately. The sticky posts reappeared on the home page.

Is the problem with navigation in the gallery a bug? I gather that the Jetpack/Featured Posts is a known issue. We need Fourteen Extended so I wondering if I should just forget about Jetpack for now and find another plug-in that can display a proper gallery.

    Thanks

    Hi Sandy,

No need to apologize, we all do that at some point – lol, I do that kind of thing almost too often.

Yes the issues with Jetpack are a known issue and fixes are already in place – as far as I’m aware we are just waiting on them to finish the beta testing and release the updates.

I’d fire before ditching Jetpack though – I believe it is only just getting better with more to come 🙂

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

    Regards,
    Zulf.

P.S. Just recalled having seen the authors of Jetpack giving a link to the current beta version of the plugin – worth a try? Just have a look through their forum and you’ll see the link.

    (@gills62ca)

Thanks Zulf – I don’t plan on abandoning JetPack, just finding another gallery plugin to tide me over until it’s fixed. I looked for the link to the beta but didn’t find it.

I did find a troubleshooting page at the Jetpack site though, and followed this instruction:

check your XMLRPC file. You can do this by going to your web site URL and adding “/xmlrpc.php” to the end (without the quotes). When it loads in your browser, you should see “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” on a line by itself.

I got a “page not found” error message.

If you get an 404 Error Not Found message, contact your web host. They may have security in place that is blocking XMLRPC.

Should I go ahead and do this? I’ve been wondering if part of the problem is the hosting service.

I would say for your peace of mind and to avoid future frustration with other plugins not functioning as they should, yes do that.

    Cool.

I’m marking this thread as resolved for now but if we are still having the same issue then please do feel free to open a new thread or respond here and I’ll follow up as soon as I can.
