 * I’m looking for a way to automatically crop thumbnail images rather than stretching
   them when they don’t fit the aspect ratio.

 * Please note that you can crop images, but not automatically. See the [following image](https://vgy.me/JXI4IC.png).
 * Also, your container is small in order to include the gallery with full width.
   If your Theme has a page template with full width container, then please use 
   it. Moreover, you can change the margins of the images from Themes section.
