Thumbnails not present after uploading media pix in WP 3.8.3

    This is the message I get after uploading a picture file:
    Image data does not exist. Please re-upload the image.

    And what my file path looks like after I click on Edit Media:

    Also, I noticed that the “crunching” function just stops midstream,
    and I never see a thumbnail.

    It seems the picture has uploaded but is not being turned into a thumbnail. I have turned off all of my plugins. I am working in Portfolio Press theme which I have just downloaded the most recent version.

    I saw that many others are having this problem, but no real resolution. Any thoughts, anyone?
