# Thumbnails not all being generated

 * In some of the galleries the thumbnails are showing as broken images. This is
   from the frontend of the website. In the admin all thumbnails are visible. On
   checking I see the ones appearing have dynamic in their URL whereas the ones
   that aren’t appearing don’t. But I also checked another gallery and it doesn’t
   use the dynamic folder at all and the thumbnails still manage to work.
 * I’ve tried using the bulk action of Create New Thumbnails but this doesn’t make
   any difference. I’ve selected an individual thumbnail and clicked Publish and
   Edit, still no change. I’ve cleared the image cache in nextgen options.
 * It could have something to do with the way I’ve had to create the galleries.
   There are 2 sets of the same images – 1 set is low-res and the other set is hi-
   res. The low-res images are not a problem to deal with but the hi-res are very
   large and when creating the galleries it hangs after adding about 4 images and
   creating 4 thumbnails. I then have to manually copy the hi-res files into the
   folder that nextgen has created. Then copy the thumbnails from the low res thumbnail
   folder (they have the same file names as the hi-res so that works). I then Scan
   the folder for new images and I can see all thumbnails.
 * Also when creating new thumbnails for the hi-res images it often hangs and says
   host might be throttling, trying again in 30 secs – and just keeps doing that.
   I’ve gotten around that by just creating 1 or 2 at a time.
 * The server memory limit and execution time have been increased but it doesn’t
   seem to help.
 * Please can you advise what to do. It’s odd because it hasn’t happened with every
   gallery so I don’t understand what the problem is.

 * [@artisanweb](https://wordpress.org/support/users/artisanweb/) – NextGEN Gallery
   is not really designed to manage two different resolutions of the same image
   within the same gallery the way you are describing your scenario.
 * I would suggest making sure your server memory limits are adequately set then
   upload the hi-res images and use the automatic re-sizing to general “low-res”
   images for display (and to have thumbnails generated from); but, given the message
   you reported you may need to work with your web host to have your site use an
   environment that is capable of uploading multiple hi-res (read very large size
   files) images.
 * Thanks!

 * The different resolutions are in separate galleries. For example: gallery1-lowres,
   gallery1-hires. The hi-res have to stay hi-res because they’re available for
   people to download. If I use automatic re-sizing won’t the final “large” image
   then be reduced in size and therefore not hi-res for people who want to download
   it?

 * [@artisanweb](https://wordpress.org/support/users/artisanweb/) – How your visitors
   download your images is a different matter, but if these are separate galleries
   then you should not be trying to mix the thumbnails together for them. You can
   set specific thumbnail sizes for each display as needed, that may be your better
   approach in this case as well.

 * I’m using NextGen Download Gallery for the download part ([https://wordpress.org/plugins/nextgen-download-gallery/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/nextgen-download-gallery/)).
   The Hi-res versions of the gallery have to stay Hi-res and not be re-sized. I’ve
   tried deactivating this plugin but doesn’t change anything.
 * I am still getting the “Host might be throttling” error message. When creating
   a new gallery it creates about 4 thumbnails and images in the gallery and then
   hangs. The only way I can get it to complete making the gallery is to manually
   FTP the large images into the gallery folder, tell it to scan the folder for
   new images and it creates the rest of the gallery with broken images for thumbnails.
   I then try the bulk action of “create new thumbnails” and at that point get the
   throttling error message.
 * If I try creating new thumbnails one at a time I don’t get the error message.
 * Thumbnail sizes are all the same so I’m not sure how that helps.
 * Any suggestions?

 * [@artisanweb](https://wordpress.org/support/users/artisanweb/) – It may still
   be a hosting issue and we do not offer support for third-party extensions of
   NextGEN Gallery so you may need to work with the other author for assistance
   with the downloads issue that may remain.
 * Thanks!

 * The problem isn’t with the other plugin – the error message still occurs when
   that plugin is de-activated. I will check with the host.

 * The hosting company solved it by editing some commented-out set-memory variables.
   Looks like they edited the file nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/
   nextgen_data/package.module.nextgen_data.php
 * Not ideal to edit the plugin files but at least I’m not getting the throttling
   error message.
 * I’ll send a bug report.

 * [@artisanweb](https://wordpress.org/support/users/artisanweb/) – Thanks for the
   follow-up on this although I am not seeing anything in particular that could
   be commented out to sort out this problem in that specific file.
 * It would be really helpful to include the specifics of the edits in your Bug
   Report.
 * Thanks!
