The problem seems to be linked to your theme: it includes an extension called “Cleaner gallery” that disables Jetpack Carousel.

You can read more about it here:

To solve the issue, could you try to install this small plugin? It will deactivate the Cleaner Gallery extension, and you will then be able to use Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries.

    Hi Jeremy

Thanks for that. Yes I remember that was installed to deal with other issues. i can’t actually remember at this point what they were! I’ma bit worried to install it if it makes a mess of something else I fixed.

Do I need to use tiled galleries to have rectangular thumbnails? i’m perfectly happy with the gallery, just need to change the thumbnail size.

    Thank you.

PS Have just tried the plugin. It wouldn’t install and I got this message:

“The package could not be installed. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature”

You don’t have to use Tiled Galleries. You could change the thumbnail size by customizing the gallery shortcode that’s added to your posts:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Gallery_Shortcode

You’ll need to change the size parameter to “medium”, “large”, or “full”.

Could you try to install the plugin manually, as explained here:

How can I change the size f the thumbnails so they are not automatically cropped? I would prefer them more rectangular.

Also, there’s an option controls how thumbnails are cropped at the time the images are uploaded. You can find it at Settings > Media > “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” in your blog dashboard.

I checked http://test.purewebsites.co.nz/lastparadise/photos/the-story/a-gypsy-life-in-africa/ just now and the images look rectangular to me, so you probably have the thumbnail crop option unchecked.
