Support » Plugin: WordPress Popular Posts » Thumbnail not showing – due to Storage container?

  • Hi there,

Appreciate if someone could help with this. All of the thumbnails for the popular posts work fine, aside from one article – I noticed that the image of this popular post is linked to my recent move to store images in windows azure storage container.

The rest of my images are contained in the ‘normal’ storage locations of WP, but this one is held at http://media.mywebsite.com/rgt-website/2014/06/image.jpg

Is there anything I can do about this? To be clear, WordPress IS finding the image as featured – so that’s cool, but it would appear as though Popular posts just isn’t understanding this.

hxxp://www.redgamingtech.com/ – obviously I can’t be certain that the post will remain popular when someone sees this however 🙂

    Hi CR,

It seems WPP is trying to create the thumbnail at the new location, and fails. As a workaround, try uploading the image to WordPress’ Uploads folder instead.

    Thanks for the reply

I figured it was something like that – but it’s a lot of manual work and one of the reasons I’m doing this is to reduce the size of the files on the website and to switch to easy to scale storage.

Do you know of any way I could just tell Popular “here’s the location of the image, use this and resize it”

For example all images are the same dimensions – 750×150 so the ‘thumbnail’ for the popular is only 325 in width.

Is there anyway I can just tell popular to take the featured image, scale it down to 325 in width and that’s it rather than trying to make a new image?

Unfortunately, this can’t be avoided: at the moment, the plugin can only create images locally (your server), so even if you move all your images to a external storage WPP will download them once to create the thumbnail and store it on your Uploads folder.

To create images on external servers (say, an Amazon storage service for example), the plugin would need some sort of integration with these services to upload files over there. This is something WPP can’t do now.

Resizing big images to fit a given size is possible, but in turn this will also increase the loading times of your pages – which is something unwanted in my opinion. This is why the plugin creates thumbnails instead of using the original images.

You could also configure WPP to get images from a given location setting Pick image from to Custom field (wp-admin > Settings > WordPress Popular Posts > Tools) but as you can already guess this would also require even more manual work because then you’d need to do this for all of your posts. And there’s also the fact I pointed out before: thumbnails will still be stored locally.
