Thumbnail Gallery – Bottom of posts

I am trying to achieve a thumbnail gallery similar to the one on the site thesuperficial[dot]com. The gallery has thumbnails located at the bottom of the posts and when selecting one of the thumbnail images, you are navigated to a page containing a larger photo of the selected thumbnail. Below that larger image of the selected thumbnail, would be the remaining thumbnails. So far I have tried a plugin know as cleaner gallery, the navigation to the attachment page works great but the larger image and remaining thumbnails do not show up. The option of using custom fields was my ideal choice but not have luck with that.
Definitely scope out the site example mentioned above, it will help a lot.
